Trade Unions found trade union network at Irish Multinational CRH in Dublin

On 26 and 27 March 2019, 30 trade union representatives and workers‘ representatives from all over Europe gathered in Dublin and discussed the status of social dialogue in Irish Construction Materials and Cement MNC CRH.

For the first time, trade unions took the time to discuss the situation at CRH: European Works Council (at CRH called „Euroforum“), trade union network, communication among works councils and affected trade unions came together in order to improve the situation in this Irish company that has become one of the top players in cement and construction materials industries. The European Federation of Building and Woodworkers (EFBWW) had invited to the meeting, and Irish multiprofessional trade union SIPTU hosted the meeting.

The attendants developed, discussed and adopted a joint statement (English, French, Polish, Romanian, Dutch, German) in order to streamline their proposals and demands towards CRH management and future activities in the network. They also installed a steering committee for the trade union network, which will coordinate these activities and also keep the relation with the non-European trade unions and federations (BWI and IndustriALL Global Union).

EFBWW General Secretary Sam Hägglund, who attended the meeting in person, commented: „I am glad to see what we already have within CRH when it comes to trade union presence. But there is still a long way to go to install a functioning social dialogue and a proper European Works Council at CRH. But I think yesterday and today the network has made good progress and adopted a purposeful joint statement.“
